At SBS, innovation and sustainability are what drive us. That’s why we’re proud to be part of the Basque Industrial Hub for Circularity (BIH4C)—a major European project aimed at accelerating the decarbonisation of the Basque industrial sector.

The BIH4C initiative is part of the IS2H4C project (“Sustainable Circular Economy Transition: from Industrial Symbiosis to Hubs for Circularity”), led by the University of Twente in the Netherlands. The project’s mission is to pave the way for the development of hubs for circularity, based on the circularity and resilience needs of current and future industrial areas and their surrounding ecosystems. Specifically, the Basque hub brings together the strengths of the region’s innovation ecosystem, with the clear goal of advancing the decarbonisation of Basque industry. This initiative is part of a broader effort that also includes the creation of three additional business hubs in Germany, the Netherlands, and Turkey.

goal of implementing innovative sustainability systems within the industry itself.

To achieve this, the following objectives have been set:

  • Reduce CO₂ emissions by 20% and material resource consumption by 10% in the coming years.
  • Establish business synergies to boost the circular economy.

More than just a project, the Basque BIH4C hub represents a vibrant ecosystem of innovation.

We’re launching a project to help decarbonise the Basque industrial sector.
Our colleagues Aitor Pablos and Mikel Errasti attended the launch event.

SBS joins the BIH4C initiative with a strong commitment to creating value by collecting alkaline waste from the steel industry and carbonating it using CO₂ emissions from the lime industry. This approach pursues a dual objective:

– Significantly reduce CO₂ emissions, contributing to the fight against climate change.

– Valorise existing alkaline waste from industry, promoting the circular economy and moving toward zero waste.

Led by Tecnalia, the BIH4C hub will bring together eight key players from the Basque industrial ecosystem: Spouted Bed Solutions, Calcinor, Sidenor, Lointek, Petronor Innovación, Smurfit Kappa, Nortegas, and the Bilbao Bizkaia Water Consortium.
