With a strong commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the Basque Country and moving toward net-zero, the NEUSBED project was launched as a continuation of the eco-innovation initiative NEUCLIEM, started in 2020.
This project aims to advance the scaling of the NEUCICLEM process by developing a demonstration project based on the mineralisation of alkaline waste through accelerated carbonation.
It is a promising Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) technology that enables the sequestration of CO₂ from industrial flue gases using alkaline materials. In this way, the valorised alkaline residues represent a major breakthrough for the cement industry, as they can be used as supplementary cementitious materials with a negative carbon impact.
NEUSBED has the following environmental objectives:
-
- Contribute to reducing CO₂ emissions in the cement industry
- Decrease the consumption of raw materials such as cement and clinker
- Reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills
In addition, the project aims to create new jobs through a business model based on the principles of the circular economy.
SBS is contributing to the project by providing its HECO (High Efficiency Contact) Technology as the carbonation reactor. This is a highly efficient and versatile gas-solid contact technology based on the spouted bed system.
NEUSBED is a clear example of collaboration between research, industry, and public institutions to drive circular economy and decarbonization efforts in the Basque Country.
The project is co-funded by Ihobe through the 2020 call of the programme “Ecodesign, Demonstration Projects in Circular Economy and Strategic Eco-Innovation,” under Line 2 – Strategic Eco-Innovation. It brings together the participation of SBS, TH COMPANY, REZOLA, and TECNALIA.
