The risks associated with storing waste in landfills include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">High pollution potential<\/span>: Risk of soil and water contamination, leachate generation, and greenhouse gas emissions.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Impact on wildlife<\/span>: Disruption of bird migration patterns and the risk of fatal dietary exposure.<\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Safety hazards<\/span>: Possibility of fires or explosions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>According to the <span class=\"s1\">ISWA report<\/span>, 40% of global waste ends up in landfills\u2014where just the <span class=\"s1\">50 largest sites affect the daily lives of 64 million people<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h6 class=\"p1\">Energy Recovery<b><\/b><\/h6>\n<p class=\"p3\">Also known as <span class=\"s1\">Waste-to-Energy (WtE)<\/span>, energy recovery aims to convert waste into usable energy. The most common method is <span class=\"s1\">incineration<\/span>, or combustion with excess oxygen.
